The children come out with fantastic things sometime so I will try and get them down before they get forgotten.

The most recent was Morgan, talking to Ruaridh, about me...

Morgan's Eating

Morgan is a fussy eater. Hell no - he has an eating disorder. There I've said it. It has been going on for so long now that we accept it as normal for him - but to an outsider he is by no means a normal eater and it is a recent event that has made me do something about his problems.

It had to happen. But we never expected it so soon. Morgan apparently has a girlfriend. The other week, he and his friend Molly spent about an hour sitting together, arm-in-arm, gazing into each other's eyes, in our local soft play centre. On the way home, Lucy asked Morgan about Molly, and he answered I really lo...like her.

Now yesterday, we were at the park, and so was Molly. When I called Morgan to go, he was sat apparently on her lap, with her arms round him on a wee roundabout, which was being pushed round by their mutual friend Maya.

Morgan made a decision last night: today he will take his Teddy Higgins into preschool, carrying him in a sling. As long-standing sling users ourselves, we have a small size sling for Morgan so he can join in.

Morgan starts in P1 (ie 'real' school) in August. How long will our bright, enthusiastic, caring little boy feel confident taking a Teddy into school? How long until the Lord of the Flies society that is boys' peer pressure drums it into him that this is not cool, not hard and not acceptable? This is a precious, short window where he can behave as he wants to, not how his mates tell him he ought to.

Lower Case Keyboard Overlay

Morgan's now pretty good with letters - he may not be that good with pencil in hand, but he can put together quite a few words from letter shapes. This means he can type a little. Or rather, he could, but he's used to lowercase letters, and standard keyboards are all uppercase. Here's a keyboard overlay that would help.

Morgan's Birth Story

Before the birth

Morgan was due on August 22nd 2001. I did a lot of reading when I was first pregnant - including a lot by Michel Odent and Sheila Kitzinger. Using this knowledge and a lot of on-line conversations from various e-groups I had joined I decided that I did not want to have an intervention-filled hospital birth and started looking into home births. I specifically wanted a water birth and started to look around Edinburgh for support. I soon found the Birth Resource Centre which offered advice as well as birth classes which I quickly signed up for. They were able to give me the name of a woman who I could hire a birth pool from. I also booked a home birth with my local community midwives. All was looking good. I was told that my local midwives would support me for two weeks before my due date and ten days after. I knew that the baby would be late so looking at the dates I reckoned I would go into labour on day ten and give birth on September 2nd during the Italian Grand Prix. How close I was - Morgan was born on September 2nd, after the Belgian Grand Prix (I had the Grand Prixs wrong in my diary). Anyway - here's Morgan's story:

Sometimes I am inspired to write about a happening, a moment or a special time.
